Enjoy this video while it lasts. Ana Ivanovic has been bounced from the French Open. You’d think the French would stand up for themselves and keep her in it. But no, they continue to not be beneficial to the world community. Read more

Smoltz Looks Solid in Rehab Start

Posted by Morry Levine May 31, 2009 at 9:16 pm

The road back to the majors continued today for Red Sox pitcher John Smoltz as he made another minor league start, this time back with Greenville. It was his third rehab start – and he looked strong over five innings of work as he allowed a run on four hits and closed by retiring his final seven batters — including the final three on strikeouts.

Smoltz tells the AP, “I don’t think I’m far away. Today was more a familiar pitching that I thought I was capable of the last month, two months.”

“I think I’m going to get a little more complete each time. For the most part, I’m really pleased with today’s effort. I felt really fresh in the fifth inning, even though it’s the longest stint I’ve had.”

Smoltz will make his next start with the Pawtucket Red Sox and still targets a mid-June return to the bigs.

BC Baseball Season is Over

Posted by Morry Levine May 31, 2009 at 6:31 pm

The exhausted Boston College baseball team saw their season end today. After their seven hour marathon game against Texas, there was no rest of the weary and BC battled for nine more innings, but ultimately lost 4-3 to Army.

The loss ends the season for the Eagles, who finished with a record of 34-26 and advanced to their first NCAA Championship since 1967.

Head Coach Mik Aoki obviously would’ve loved to still be playing, but couldn’t be happier with his team’s season. “Obviously, a heart-breaking loss to finish what was otherwise a really good season for us. It was a breakthrough season for us, both in the conference and nationally. Obviously, it’s disappointing. When you get into the NCAA Championships, at the very end of it, there’s really only one team that’s happy. Unfortunately, this ride came to an end a little bit sooner than we had expected. But we certainly got our share of baseball in while we were down here. We’ll look forward to building this momentum and getting back into this type of thing where we’re annually in the NCAA and ACC tournaments. We’ll continue to build the program from here.”

Taylor Twellman earned a penalty kick in stoppage time.

T-N-T, who hadn’t played since the team’s last regular season game of 2008 because of a neck injury, entered the game in the 25th minute after a standing ovation from the crowd.   He had an immediate impact with several scoring chances before halftime.

Shalrie Joseph tied the game with his team-leading 4th goal of the season.

The Revs are 3-3-4 (13 points) and trail the Chicago Fire, the Eastern Conference leaders,  by 7 points.

Next Match:  Sunday, June 7 vs. New York Red Bulls @ Gillette Stadium.

BC Loses to Texas in Record Game

Posted by Morry Levine May 31, 2009 at 7:28 am

It took an NCAA record 25 innings and just over seven hours, but the national No. 1 seed Texas pushed the game-winning run across in the top of the 25th to beat Boston College, 3-2.

BC now has to turn around and face Army, which beat Texas State in the elimination game earlier in the day, at noon CT today. Should they win, the Eagles would then have to take on Texas again in the first championship game at 6 p.m.

The Eagles have to win three-straight games to take the Austin Regional. Should BC advance past Army, it would have to beat the Longhorns twice to take the title.

A lot of numbers in the game broke records, but none were more impressive than the duel between junior Mike Belfiore and Austin Wood on the mound. Both serve as the closers on their respective teams, but the two combined for 22.2 innings pitched and 298 pitches.

FACTS AND FIGURES
Texas had to reset the scoreboard twice to post the score by inning
It was 96 degrees at first pitch at 6:02 p.m. – The game finished at 78 degrees at 1:05 a.m.
Texas introduced the 21st inning stretch
Both teams used all of their position players
There were 683 pitches thrown in the game
Texas stranded 24 men on base
Belfiore, Hamlet and Lawrence each played three positions
Texas had three runs on 20 hits
Junior Chris Kowalski recorded his first-career at-bat
There were 11 walks in the game compared to 42 strikeouts
The 10 p.m. ET game at UC Irvine game started and finished
The 25-inning game was the longest game in NCAA baseball history. The previous longest game was a 23-inning game played between Louisiana-Lafayette and McNeese State on March 27, 1971. ULL won the game 6-5.
The game also marked the longest NCAA postseason game in history. The previous longest game was a 19-inning contest between Clemson and Fordham at the NCAA Northeast Regional in New Britain, Conn. on May 26, 1988.
Texas and Boston College combined to set NCAA records with 42 strikeouts, 222 total chances, 69 assists, 192 plate appearances and 171 at-bats.
Texas’ 91 at-bats, 103 plate appearances, 115 total chances and 75 putouts set new NCAA records
Tucker and Torres set the NCAA single-game record for at-bats with 12 AB’s against BC
Preston Clark’s 33 putouts against BC set a new NCAA record for most single-game putouts

Penny Pincher

The Boston College Eagles, making their first NCAA Tournament appearance in 42 years, started off on the right foot today – with a come from behind win over Texas State.

Celtics Professional Sports Team of Year

Posted by Morry Levine May 29, 2009 at 10:04 am

The Boston Celtics will not win the title this season, but they did win something at least. They have been honored as the 2009 Professional Sports Team of the Year by the SportsBusiness Journal and SportsBusiness Daily.

The award was presented last night in New York as part of The Sports Business Awards which recognize excellence and outstanding achievement in the sports industry for 2008.

The Celtics were chosen from five nominees for Professional Sports Team of the Year including the Chicago Blackhawks, Cleveland Cavaliers, Milwaukee Brewers and Tampa Bay Rays.

In 2008, the Celtics set a record for attendance. They also doubled their full-season ticket base to more than 10,000. All of this, plus the addition of Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen, culminated in a return to glory, and the Celtics’ 17th NBA championship.
