You remember Tuukka Rask — the Finnish guy who’s been sitting the bench behind Tim Thomas while Manny Fernandez nurses his injured back. He started today. And he was good. Read more

Black and Gold Blahs

Posted by Mike Giardi January 31, 2009 at 10:13 am

As much as I tried, I couldn’t get upset/outraged over the NBA’s All-Star selections. It just doesn’t matter all that much to me. Never does. If I had a vote, I would have given Rajon Rondo the nod over Devin Harris because Devin’s a shooting guard playing the point. But to gnash my teeth, hold my breathe until I turn blue and/or shout from every rooftop…well, that’s just not my style. I’ll leave that to others, including WEEI’s Jessica Camerato. I’d much rather tell you how irritated I was with the Bruins loss Thursday night. Now that ticked me off.

Where to begin? How about the lackluster play that dominated the first 40 minutes? Oh sure, some of that is Devil imposed. They are such a hard team to play against. But you expect better than that from the top team in the Eastern Conference, especially when you consider they’re playing at home. Then again, it was like a mausoleum in there. Does that place ever get loud for hockey games? In my experiences there this year, the only team the Garden crowd rocks is when the scoreboard tells ‘em to rock. You’re better than that (or at least I thought you were…).

The B’s came to life in the third period and did something few ever do against the Devs: erase a two-goal deficit. Now we’re talking, I said to myself. Then again, perhaps that was the problem. Perhaps the Black and Gold didn’t know how to react to such a rare occurrence. Before the happy story came to a close, Brian Gionta set up Patrik Elias for the game-tying goal (hey Mark Stuart, you need to keep your head on a swivel. Didn’t you ever see “Anchorman”?). Then came the inevitable overtime loss. Yes, the B’s got a point, but they should have buried Jersey. Did you see how many rebounds Scott Clemmenson left out on front for B’s forwards to bury? All night…one after the other. Listen, I know Marty Brodeur, and you Scott Clemmenson, you are no Marty.

No time for the Bruins to let the stink of that loss linger. Not with the Rangers at the Garden this afternoon. Hopefully, the B’s will write a better story, this time from start to finish.

Amen

Posted by Mike Giardi January 30, 2009 at 3:00 pm

The day of reckoning is here, and Jason Varitek and his brilliant agent (just ask him) Scott Boras have reportedly agreed to terms on a one-year deal with the Sox, plus an option for 2010. I can’t tell you how happy this makes me. I may run down the street and wave my arms in the air like Macauley Culkin did as Kevin in “Home Alone.” Or pop a bottle of champagne. Or, at the very least, pound out what is likely a Pulitzer Prize winning blog. Now we can all focus on the other story that won’t go away: ladies and gentlemen, I introduce you to Stephon Marbury…

All stupidity aside, this is a very good thing for this ballclub. There is not a single catcher on the roster I trust to do the job Varitek will do this season. And no, I’m not one of those moonies who believes the sun sets and falls with “The Captain.” However, I’m also not a card-carrying member of Josh Bard Nation either. I realize that there is not a single backstop in Major League Baseball that knows the Sox’s staff as well as Tek does. So yes, I’m happy to see him back.

However…I also know that the Sox need to find Tek’s replacement, and find him sooner rather than later. This organization has not been able to develop a successor thus far, but with the minor league chips they have, there is no reason why they can’t trade for him. I remain firmly in the Taylor Teagarden camp, but am told that is more or less a pipe dream. The Sox gave him the once over a few years back at draft time, and didn’t like his medicals. I guess those issues persist, hence Theo’s man-love for Salty (I’m sick of typing out his full name. If you don’t know who he is by now, we’re getting nowhere…). I’m still not sure I’d give up Buchholz for him, but I’ve had some pretty smart writers who have gone a long way toward at least getting me to consider the idea, or maybe not throw up in my mouth if/when it happens.

I can’t take it anymore. What’s so hard to like about fighting in hockey? Players show emotion; fans get into the game.  It’s great.  But not in the eyes of some… Read more
