Enjoy the Day

It is the beginning of what looks like a tremendous day here in New England. I’d be psyched if I didn’t have to work. I know, cry me a river. I’ve been channeling my inner-weatherman for some of this good stuff, so I guess I should just be happy that sunshine has finally arrived. Besides, my lawn is green. Okay, the weeds that double as my lawn are green. Whatever. From a distance, you’d think I’m a mini Dave Mellor (the Fenway’s groundskeeper). Anyway…here’s some thoughts from the week that was.

  • Don’t you love how the PR machines in this town work? All of a sudden, Rajon Rondo is a prima donna. Funny how no one mentioned that all season as he became arguably the C’s most important player. But now that the team may be exploring a possible deal that includes dumping Ray Allen’s contract, some of the Celts media peeps are putting that story out there. Always got to check the temperature I suppose, but I think the C’s brass ought to play the game at a higher level. That’s just me.
  • Is this the best Red Sox bullpen ever? Even with Ramon Ramirez suddenly becoming human the last few days, and Papelbon no longer an easy ride, this group has been far and away the team’s greatest strength. I just wonder how Tito will manage the pen with 5-inning Matsuzaka on the bump tonight.
  • The John Henry tweet about the curse of Mark Teixeira is embarrassing for the Sox owner. Come on man. Grow up.
  • So, does Teixeira intend to answer Henry with a tweet of his own in the near future?
    Don’t hold your breath.
“I have everyone’s phone number that I need to talk to,” said Teixeira, obviously not a Twitter fan. “How old is Mr. Henry? There’s no reason for me to get into any war of words with some 70-something-year-old man. It doesn’t make any sense.”
For the record, Henry is 59 years old.
But Teixeira did deliver one parting shot at Henry when he was asked if Henry’s tweet might have any effect on his reputation around the league.
“You guys make that decision,” Teixeira. “(But) whose reputation looks better right now?”

  • Tim Wakefield as an all-star? Listen, I get Sox fans like the guy for all these years of service, but he’s not one of the top 50 pitchers in the American League, let alone the top 12 or 13.
  • Do you think Julio Lugo gets DFA’d the day Jed Lowrie returns from his wrist injury?
  • Terrific hockey game last night. Who amongst you thought the Penguins would out-do the Wings in a Game 7 in Detroit? Especially with Sid the Kid useless for two periods? Stunning, but a great night for the NHL. Two of its premier players now have a Cup.
  • Finally, I leave you with my musical obsession of the week.
